Visiting Koh Larn, also known as the coral island is a great change of pace from Pattaya.
My first trip to Koh Larn was a spur of the moment decision and in part an adventure all on its own. I was speaking with a young woman in a bar and she asked me where I had been visiting in Thailand. I listed some towns from north to south and then she asked if I had ever been to Koh Larn. I told her no and she announced that she hadn’t ever been there either.
A decision was made there and then that we might take the short trip to Koh Larn the following day. We spent the night together and made agreements for the boat ride and tour at one of many street seller tour women. We scheduled for a early morning boat ride. The price was a gigantic ten US dollars each and this also included lunch. We walked down from 2nd Road to Beach Road and met our little longboat that would take us out to the bigger boat for the trip to Koh Larn.
But first, we stopped at a square dock and were offered a kite-flying ride for an extra ten greenbacks. After trying out some kite flying, we then boarded a larger boat and chugged on out to the island.
The ride took about forty five minutes and we were met by another tiny, long boat to take us to shore. This boat had a glass bottom to see the coral, but the water was too murky to see anything. We got ashore and since this was a heat of the moment trip, I purchased my girl a swimming suit.
We staked out a patch of beach and got two lounge chairs for roughly one dollar for the day for both and just kicked back and relaxed. The water was great and we spent some time in it and just lazed about on the beach for the rest of the day.
We were offered a selection of sea activities from underwater walking to banana boat rides. We were also served lunch with the remainder of the group and it was OK but nothing special. Rice, some fried pork, chips and a cold drink.
There were a few sellers attempting to sell their goods but they weren’t being pests. They came by once and left with a grin when I declined. Eventually it became time to head on back. We took the little boat to the bigger boat and relaxed and listened to some music on the way back. The boat moved at a snail’s pace and there had been enough of a breeze to keep things cool.
All and all the excursion was worth the few dollars that we ended up spending and definitely a trip to include when heading out to Thailand.
